Santa Maria Maggiore is another of the important churchs of Rome. In the 14th century his bell tower was the highest of Rome. Rome is full of churches, there are churches everywhere!

In summer 2007, after coming back from Portugal, mom went to Rome to take Italian classes for 2 weeks, and she took me with her. Just after arriving there, as it was Sunday, we decided to take a day trip to a nearby village called Tivoli, where there is Villa d'Este. This is a Renaissance palace with a garden where you can see lots of very beautiful fountains, like that Pegaso Fountain.

This is another fountain with statues of Villa d'Este. It's called "Rometta", or Little Rome, because it represents a little Rome. There is the statue of victorious Rome and also the Capitoline Wolf with Romulus and Remus.

In Tivoli there is also Villa Adriana, which was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the second century. It is now in ruins, but it is very nice and interesting. This building is called Teatro Marittimo. It's not a theater but a building surrounded by a ring of water. Surely it was like a house with a swimming pool around her, how clever were Romans ...

The next day we started seeing the monumental ruins of the ancient Rome. I felt very small in front of the Colosseum (Colosseo in Italian, I guess that this is because of its size, is huge!). It's 57 meter high and its circumference measures 500 meter. There was place for 50,000 people, imagine that at the time of the Romans ... Amazing!

We visited also the Roman Forum, it's huge, but everything is in ruins, of course. In particular these columns belong to the temple of Saturn.

The next day we went to the Vatican City. The Basilica of San Pietro is really huge. There were lots of people everywhere. Now it takes longer to get in as there are many lines because they put metal detectors. The facade was made by Bernini (Baroque) and the obelisk was brought from Egypt by the Romans in the first century. Rome is full of obelisks brought from Egypt throughout its history. There are many in Rome but also in Paris. It amazes me that there are still some obelisks in Egypt ...

Near the Vatican City there is Sant'Angelo Castle. It was the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, but during the Middle Ages it became a fortress. A part of it was also a prison. Above there is the statue of the archangel Saint Michael.

Another day we went to see the Capitoline Museums, but mom could only take me out in the outdoor halls. So she took a picture of me with this giant foot, that belonged to a huge statue of Emperor Constantine. It measures at least one meter and a half or 2 meter ... There are other pieces of the statue: the head, a hand ... all huge!

The Royal Palace of Queluz reminds me to Versailles or Aranjuez, as it was built in the same period (18th century).

After the Royal Palace of Queluz, we visited another palace named Pena Palace. It's situated in Sintra (a wonderful village that I recommend you). A German married to a Portuguese queen made build it. That German was a relative of Ludwig II (the Mad King) and he was inspired in the famous castles of Bavaria to have a replica in Portugal.

In Sintra there is also a house named Quinta de Regaleira. A rich man asked an Italian architect to build it. It seems that the rich man was a mason and he liked esoteric things. So the house and the gardens are full of esoteric details like pits, subterranean grottos and so on. It's amazing!

On the third day we went on a daytrip to Mafra, Sobreiro and Ericeira.
Mafra monastery is called "the Portuguese Escorial" (- Escorial is a monastery in Spain, near Madrid - ). A king who did not have any children made a promise that he would build a convent there if his wife could give him a child. A baby girl was born, and the king gave orders to build the convent. Then the convent turned into monastery, and a palace was added, although the king and queen almost never lived here. It's really huuuuuuuuuuuuge!

In Sobreiro, a Portuguese man wanted to recreate a typical Portuguese village, and so he built several houses, the school, the blacksmith's house, the shoemaker's house, the bakery, the windmill... and also a part of it was built in miniature. What do you think of this house of my size? Maybe I will rent it for my next holidays :D

The day after we went to Salamanca. The sun was shining, hoorray!!! But it was really cold...
Here you can see a part of the cathedral.

Here I feel like a student in ancient times, in the cloister of the Minor Schools.

I simply had to appear in a picture in front of the House of the Shells. It was very windy! Don't look at my hair, please...

What? You wanted to compare me with that dumb there? Without any doubt, I am the prettiest and the most glamourous!!!! And besides, she is looking down at me, she's so envious at me...

In the Plaza Mayor of Salamanca hey had also put a Christmas tree, of course...
Mami, investiga, porfi...

Mom took me to the orchard of Calixto and Melibea. According to her, they were the main characters of a book called La Celestina. Sitting on the tree and with the cathedral behind me, I was trying to imagine how Melibea would meet her beloved Calixto in that garden. Sigh!! I also want a Calixto for me... Will there be Blythe boys around the world? Mum, investigate for me please...

As you can see from the picture of the famous aqueduct, the last place we went was Segovia.

Of course, we also visited the Alcazar. I imagined stories of knights and princesses...

I imagined that I was a princess locked in that tower and that an armoured handsome knight would come to rescue me...

And what you see on the picture now is the Alcazar, seen from the opposite side of the river Edesma.
I am good at being a tourist guide, don't you think so?

During my last day in Valladolid, I went to see again my Christmas friends in the Plaza Mayor. Farewell Santa Claus! I hope that you bring me many presents, as I have been a good girl...
You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen...
¿Dónde está Rudolph?

Ohhh, and that time I even could see Santa Claus reindeers.

As Mom and I love the Da Vinci Code, we went to visit Saint Sulpice church, but half of it was being renovated.
At the end of the day we went to Montmartre, and it was very crowded as you can see. First of all we visited the Sacré Coeur church.

Hi everybody!!! This is my second travel journal, that time we went to Paris.
I was told that Paris was a wonderful city, so I couldn't stand to stay in the bag for a long time and wanted to travel seated in Paris subway, like everybody.

The first thing I wanted to see was the Eiffel Tower, it's sooooooooo big!!! And I felt so small there...

As the tower was so beautiful, I wanted another picture, but taken from a longer distance, so that I don't feel like a little dwarf hehehe.

Afterwards, Mom wanted to visit Les Invalides. There is Napoleon's grave. Too big a grave for such a small emperor, hehe. But the building is very beautiful.

Another one of Mum's caprices: to visit the museum of the sculptor Rodin. She has such funny ideas... If you pay attention, on the right of my little head you will see his most famous statue: The Thinker.

The day after, we began our cultural visit by visiting Notre Dame church. Luckily Quasimodo was not there, otherwise I would have run till Barcelona without stopping...

We also visited the Conciergerie. During the French Revolution, they had Marie Antoinette shut up there before cutting her head off. How frightening!!!

Then we visited the theatre of the Opera Garnier, which is Modern Style (Art Nouveau as they say in French). It was being refurbished, so the golden statues were shining under the sun.

I told Mum that I wanted to see the most "chic" zone of Paris, so she took me to Place Vendome. Apart from having that column with damn Napoleon on top, there is also the Hotel Ritz and the most famous diamond shops in Paris. What a tentation for a posh like me!

The previous afternoon, Mum went to visit the Louvre museum, and I was all the time in a bag at the left luggages. She told me that I would not feel at ease with so many people. Grr! I like art so much...
Anyway, the day after I complained, and she took me to see more places. We began with the Pantheon, where many famous French people are buried (writers, politicians, etc.)

We took a walk at the Luxembourg garden. There is a pond where children rent small sailing ships to make them sail. Luckily it was quite windy, so there were many sailing ships there.

Hi! I'm Rowena and I'm going to tell you about my trip to Castilla in December 2006.
The first place I visited was Valladolid. I liked to see little houses "almost my size" in the Plaza Mayor. But some of them had quite strange tenants...

Another of the houses was Santa Claus cabin. People say that he's a very cheerful man, but I thought he looked so serious... So I didn't trust him and kept my distance...

They also put a crib near the little houses with the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, little Jesus... and also with little lambs!

Other houses had more nice tenants, like that cute goblin.

¡Socorro! ¡Un árbol que habla!
Menudo susto me llevé...

Help! A talking tree!
What a fright... Then I saw that it was a magic tree who was telling fairy tales to he children.

In the very middle of Plaza Mayor was that huge Christmas tree. It was very cold!!

Here I am in front of Santa Maria de la Antigua church. As you can see, I love art and I love to appear in pictures with monuments and buildings.

I don't like modern art that much. Mom wanted to take that picture of me on top of a sort of strange bycicle-statue. I told her yes unwillingly, but the bycicle was so tall that I lost my balance and fell flat on my face, luckily there was grass there. Mom and I were very scared!

Again with Santa Maria de la Antigua church from another point of view. Here you can see better the bell tower.

A little rest after so much walking. We went to Campo Grande park, and there were peacocks running around there. This white one is a bit strange...

Mejor me mantengo a distancia...

Even if that one has a tail with many colours, I don't trust him very much... I better keep my distance...

¡Vaya!

O my! There are also other creatures in Campo Grande...
No no, I don't mean the doves, there are doves everywhere. I mean the squirrels, there were some of them there and a man was giving nuts to them. Some of them ate the nuts, and some of them just hid them. Look the one at my right side, she's eating a nut...

I love when people take pictures of me!!! I think that I was born to be a model... In the park there was a photographer with a very strange camera, the kind you only see in old films. I stayed in front of them, to see if he wanted to take pictures of me, but he did not move his head from behind the camera. Maybe he was frozen because it was so cold. How strange!

After so much bustle in the park, here I am taking a rest near the pond, looking at the ducks and the swans (yes, even if they don't appear in the picture, there were many of them).

Here I am with an old vase of the park, showing my artistic side, as always.

Casi me vuelvo a caer...

Mum and her friends wanted to take a Christmas picture of me, and as it was a public holiday and the shops were closed, they put me on the Christmas decoration of a shop. I almost fell flat on my face again... Twice on the same day would have been too much...

¡¡¡¡¡ FELIZ NAVIDAD !!!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!!!
I like this little creature very much, and as he was carrying a "Merry Christmas" sign, and as we both were dressed for Christmas, we decided that this one would be my Christmas 2006 image.

The day after, we went to León (as you can see from the statue). It was raining all day long, that's the reason why I don't appear in many pictures :(

Here I am taking shelter from the rain in the cloister of the Guzmanes Palace, the seat of the Regional Council.

Here I am again taking shelter from the rain, this time under the arcades of the Plaza Mayor. What you see behind me is the Town Hall.

I was almost all the time in Mum's bag, what a nuisance...

I wanted to appear in that picture in front of a shop window where there were lots of carousels and little houses, and also these cute teddies.
